This was Tobbell
Films’ first short
film. It confirmed to us that we could follow through
on a vision without compromise. Shot on miniDV, we were
lucky to get great locations, great actors and fantastic
music - all for free! Twelve people (that’s including
musicians, cast and crew) were involved in the making
of Sweet Sayuri.
This film was inspired
by movies such as Battle Royale and the Ring films, as
well as by the director’s first hand experience
of Japanese culture during a trip the Far East.
Tobias loves Japanese film and enjoys experimenting with
different visual styles.
Sweet Sayuri was used as an oppor- |
tunity to play with
various historical film styles, such as classic black
and white, film noir, stills and the 60’s style.
Set in Cambridge, England, it tells
the story of three English men that are
besotted with a seemingly sweet and innocent Japanese
girl. In their quests to win her heart, they attempt to
learn her language. The beautiful girl, however, is not
as naïve as she appears, stringing them all along
and ultimately having a rather unpleasant surprise in
store for each one of them.
The premiere
was at the Curzon Cinema, Mayfair and Tobbell Films is
now in the process of submitting it to festivals in London
and the UK. |
