‘Penterghast’,
though a stand alone short, was originally created as
part of a feature film, ‘Every Picture’. The
feature is about a couple trapped in a haunted school,
the animation gives a little of the back-story on the
school.
It was always supposed to be a stylised 3 or 4 minute
piece using 2 dimensional backgrounds and 3 dimensional
characters. However when John Horabin took on the project
it took on a more unique life of it’s own, mixing
many different kinds of animation to give it its haunting
identity.

Clare McKenna plays
the boy narrating the hideous story, her soft Irish accent
distorted to give a menacing but absorbing account of
the teacher’s fate. Of course sound and music play
a key role in animation to breath real life into the artificial
images. Zhe Wu and Rhett Brewer (designer and composer
respectively) created this creepy soundtrack in just a
few days once the animation was near enough complete.
